If I buy this camera I can take better photographs

Posted on April 24th, 2019

Every now and then I look at my photographs and think to myself, ‘this would have looked a lot better if I had x lens or x camera’. Then spend a couple of days looking through my favourite camera and lens websites to see if there’s anything out there that I could buy to improve my photography.

Now, I’m not saying that there isn’t some great cameras out there, and I’m pretty sure I could take some very nice pictures if I had a Nikon D850 with an appropriately expensive lens attached. But bigger and better isn’t always the answer.

The above picture was taken on my first DSLR, a Nikon D3100 with the 55-200mm (non VR!) lens. I still have the camera as a backup but sadly traded in the lens. This image was taken in 2015 and as of time of writing this post I still consider it my best bird photo. I use this photograph as an example that you don’t need the latest and greatest camera to take a great image and now it’s by go-to whenever I think I need a new lens.

Do you have any similar experiences? Do you have an old image you use as an example of your best work? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
