Pricing photographs annoys me. I’m not a business person. I would much rather be outside taking photographs. But I do keep trying to sell my photos. Why? Possibly a bit of sheer lunacy mixed with a yearning to justify and expensive hobby while also capturing some kind of statistic that lets me know others like my photographs as much as I do (given that I’m not a millionaire yet I don’t hold out much hope for that last one).

So what am I on about? This site was created with a few reasons in mind. One of them is I want to keep selling prints because in reality I love the idea that someone likes my work enough to feel like it has a place in their home (unless they’re buying it to burn in which case there’s much cheaper ways to heat your home). But I hate putting a price on things. The most expensive photographs in the world sell for millions. Are they any good? That’s subjective I guess like all art. But I can’t put a million pound price tag on my photos (well I can, I’m not sure what the reaction would be though……I might try it one day and see if any of those rich futurists going into space want some cheap art). So here I am once again thinking what price do I put on these things?

Would you pay a million pounds for this picture? If the answer is yes we need to talk.

So this is what I’ve decided to do. I initially was going to set them to £30, a price that covers P&P and printing with a little change left in my pocket, but sod that. Until August 7th I’ve set the price of my 15 x 10” prints to as low as I can possibly go without barely making a profit. I can’t offer them for free because I don’t want to become bankrupt any time soon, but this means that I can get my prints into the hands of anyone who wants them for as cheap as I possibly can. So why is it called Pay What You Want? Because I’m leaning on the generosity of you. If you like my work enough to buy a print, firstly: thankyou, from the bottom of my heart you are incredibly awesome and I really hope you enjoy it, secondly: if you feel like I deserve more for the print and you have something to give then that’s up to you and you can ‘Buy Me A Coffee’ using this link: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/scottlyons.

As usual, thanks for taking the time to read this. It might me the start of something fun, it might end up being a damp squid in the middle of a British Summertime heat wave. Either way it should be a laugh….right?
