Wow, what a day. The first air show I’ve been to in a couple of years now since the majority of them have been cancelled or set back. I can’t believe I’ve not been to an air show at East Kirkby before, especially considering it’s one of the closest to me. So packing up the trust Tamron 150-600mm for the long shots and the 50mm and 11-16mm for a bit of fun on the ground off I went.
The displays were amazing. Granted this was no RAF Cosford with it’s fancy jets and apache helicopters, but there was something really homely about seeing a prop plane take off from a grass runway.
It should be mentioned that the primary goal of the air show is to raise funds for the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre and the excellent work that they’ve put in to restore the Lancaster Bomber Just Jane. If you’ve never been to the centre it’s well worth a visit to get face to face with a Lancaster.
So what was flying? Well, a real highlight for me was seeing the Blades aerobatic team. They never fail to amaze with their array of twists, turns and stunts. Even more so when a scaled down drone version of an Extra EA-300 was taking part in a later display with a single Blade.
Another big highlight for me was The Cheeky Champ. There’s something magical about seeing an a light aircraft dancing through the sky with a 500 foot ribbon attached to the back.
Finally it wouldn’t be an air show without Sally-B. As usual the flying fortress dominated the sky with it’s Memphis Belle coat of paint.
That’s all for now. It was great getting back outside and capturing aircraft, so here’s hoping these events start to become more common again in the future. Thanks again to everyone at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre for making this happen.
