This blog post is going out a little later than I would have probably liked since I wanted it to coincide with the YouTube video that I published. As usual if you prefer watching over reading then have a watch of the below (or do both as they are slightly different, but the same point).

So now on to the talky talky. If you’ve followed me for any amount of time you know that I don’t really have a niche in photography. I shoot anything that moves, and some things that don’t. I do have a few favourites, but generally I like to explore a lot of difference subjects rather than focus on something individual. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, although there are some school of thoughts that you should really focus on one thing and get good at it.

Despite all this I thought I would try something fun for this wonderful year of 2022. A project! I’ve never done one before, at least not that I can remember. So I thought it might be interesting to have a go at something long term. But what I hear you ask? Well, for the past couple of months I’ve found myself really enjoying taking photographs of tiny little mushrooms and other assorted fungi, as you may have notice. Things like this:

The trouble is I don’t have a clue what a lot of these mushrooms/fungi are actually called. I know a few, see that black and white one above? That’s called candlesnuff! But the rest, not a clue. So this little project I’ve concocted for myself is to find some fungi, take some excellent compositions (I see that as the easy part because we all know I’m a world class photographer right?), work out the names of them and then put the best shots into a book for myself to enjoy at the end of the year.

There’s a few things running against be on this. I’m starting this in January…..fungi in the UK are mostly associated with Autumn. This means the best months to capture them has passed. But I’m hoping to persevere and see what grows in the spring and summer months, and you never know there might be some varieties out there. If not there’s always my usual fun subjects to fall back on.

The other issue is some fungi are incredibly hard to identify unless viewed at a macro level. The last thing I want to do is create a book and they’re all named wrong, even if it is just for myself. And there is a cheeky side of me that is considering creating a book fill with fungi that I’ve named myself, e.g. BABY MUSHROOM, The Giant One That Tried To Push Me In A River and so on. I might do that anyway because it seems fun. But I think that’s going to be the hardest part, finding the names for the things. So I apologise in advance to anyone I badger in my attempts to find out.

As for finding fungi I think I’m off to a good start. There’s a couple that I found when in Bow Wood, Derbyshire a couple of weeks back, and new one’s that I’ve already identified:

What do you think, book worthy or not? Let me know in the comments.

As usual I’ll continue to film these little outings for the fungi hunt as and when I can. So if you do like a good video to watch head over to YouTube and subscribe to stay updated: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYUAjXaxRXoL-vg3JZ3KDXA

I really hope you enjoy following along as much as I’m going to have doing this project.
